At least 22 Belgian police officers were injured Saturday in riots sparked by Morocco’s qualification for the soccer World Cup next summer.

Belgium has a large Moroccan community, and fans took the streets of Brussels to celebrate the national team’s victory over the Ivory Coast. The celebrations turned into riots and police had to use water cannons to disperse a crowd of people throwing rocks.

Police said the damage included a burnt car, smashed glass and looted shops, in addition to the injured police officers.

Interior Minister Jan Jambon condemned the “unacceptable aggression in the center of Brussels.”

“Living together means respect, also for the police who are committed to our safety day and night,” Jambon said.

Violence was also reported across the Netherlands. The Hague police said some people threw rocks at officers while celebrating Morocco’s World Cup berth.
