India suspended classes at 6,000 schools for a week in the capital city of Delhi due to air pollution, according to a Thursday report.

Delhi’s air quality registered at 999 on the Air Quality Index in some areas, a score 30 times the safe limit established by the World Health Organization and 10 times that of air in Beijing, a city notorious for its poor air quality, reported CBS News.

Delhi civilians have reported headaches and problems with breathing. Low visibility caused by the smog has resulted in plane and train delays. India encourages mask protection for pregnant women, children, the elderly, and those with asthma and heart problems who must venture outside.

“The air tastes like smoke,” resident Rakesh Kumar told CBS News. “I have a constant irritation in my throat.”

Arvind Kejriwal, Delhi’s chief minister, likened Delhi to a gas chamber.
