1983: Chrome-plated Australian robot family prefers the Mitsubishi Sigma wagon

Share Facebook Tweet Pinterest Email

The Mitsubishi Galant was built in Australia by Chrysler and badged as the Chrysler Sigma through the 1979 model year. After that, Mitsubishi took over Chrysler Australia, and the Chrysler Sigma became the Mitsubishi Sigma. This ad for the second-generation Mitsubishi Sigma wagon features a nuclear family of gleaming robots with cut-rate R2D2 vocalizations and jerky movements that suggest a trip to the robot shop might be in order.

The wife and daughter of this Sigma-owning family have what appears to be Christmas-tree tinsel for hair, and the overall effect of creepiness has not diminished during the 34 years since this ad played on Australian TV.
