Furniture Row Racing will compete with just 1 NASCAR Cup entry in 2018

A second Furniture Row Racing Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series entry was always a long shot for 2018, but owner Barney Visser confirmed the impending closure of the No. 77 team.

The team released the following statement on Wednesday:

"As Furniture Row Racing looks ahead to the 2018 NASCAR Cup Series season, the Denver, Colo.-based team is not planning to field the No. 77 Toyota as a second car entry. It is our organization's goal to operate a two-car team in the future, and we will continue to seek sponsorship funding for the No. 77. Our 100 percent focus next season will be on the No. 78 Toyota Camry, which will be driven by Martin Truex Jr."

Furniture Row had expanded to two cars this season, with rookie Erik Jones joining incumbent veteran Martin Truex Jr.

Jones joined the team on loan from Joe Gibbs Racing, and the 21-year-old accumulated 12 top-10s, four top-fives and one pole. He’s 19th in points and set to replace Matt Kenseth in the No. 20 JGR Toyota next season.

Visser sold the team’s ownership charter to a mystery team last month, and any driver interested in driving the No. 77 would have to bring the funding needed to support it. Furniture Row will consolidate to a one-car effort next season with most of the employees remaining in Denver to work with Truex and the No. 78 team.
