Marvel's Cloak and Dagger Premiere Breaks Record

It looks like Marvel has another hit TV series on its hands. The company recently released the ratings for Marvel's Cloak & Dagger on Freeform and it turns out that the series smashed ratings records for the cable network.

Marvel's Cloak & Dagger is a new kind of series for the network that was once known as ABC Family. It's the first comic book-based show on the renamed network and it seems that it's exactly what Freeform viewers were looking for. The series follows the adventures of two teens, Tandy and Tyrone, from completely different backgrounds who lived through traumatic events as children, events that gave them both superpowers. This eventually brings them together, not as just allies, but as romantic partners, too.

Marvel touted the series as Freeform's "best-ever digital debut in the network's history" with 7.3 million views across both linear and digital platforms. Additionally, the show's debut on Thursday June 7 marked Freeform's biggest series launch in over two years in terms of total viewers, scoring 1.64 million. Plus, the episode became the network's most-watched drama telecast since the series finale of its long-running drama Pretty Little Liars aired its series finale in June 2017.

That's pretty good news for the network and the series, which stands a little apart from previous Marvel TV shows, although it still has some connection to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The show possibly dropped a hint to something from Agent Carter, a series that aired on ABC for two seasons from 2015-2016. The shady oil company featured in the series, Roxxon, is also something that links the series overall to the MCU. It's likely, though, that these connections will only reference the MCU, and not actually join it, especially considering what happened in Avengers: Infinity War.

Marvel did make some creative changes to the origin story of the superpowered pair, though. In the comic books, the teenagers were kidnapped by a drug cartel and given experimental drugs that gave them powers. On the TV series, though, Tandy got her powers after an oil rig blew up, causing the car she was in to crash into a river. Tyrone got his powers by jumping into that same river after his brother got shot and fell into the water. This change has some comic book fans upset, but overall, the series still seems entertaining enough to keep viewers tuning in, at least if the ratings numbers are any indication.
