Movie Poster Reuses Dwayne Johnson's Body

A poster for the Nikolaj Coster-Waldau action movie Shot Caller appears to use an image of the star’s head Photoshopped onto the body of superstar Dwayne Johnson as he appeared in a poster for the movie Snitch. Perhaps this is a wild coincidence, or perhaps there is a very lazy poster artist out there.

In Shot Caller, Game of Thrones star Coster-Waldau plays a newly-released convict who is sucked back into the world of crime when the members of his old gang force him to carry out a brutal act against members of a rival group. The 2017 film co-stars Lake Bell, Jon Bernthal, and Shut Eye star Jeffrey Donovan.

As Birth.Movies.Death writer Scott Wampler was first to point out, the poster image for Shot Caller showing Nikolaj Coster-Waldau looking very gritty and menacing bears more than a slight resemblance to a poster for the 2013 Dwayne Johnson movie Snitch. It just so happens that both movies were directed by Ric Roman Waugh, so maybe this truly is more than just a funny coincidence and Waugh needs to consider working with a more-original poster artist.

Y'know, if I didn't know any better, I'd say that's the same photo with different heads. But surely no one would be that lazy. pic.twitter.com/4JP5EAjbLs

Close examination of the image on the left shows some minor adjustments made to the bulge of Coster-Waldau’s bicep (it just wouldn’t be realistic to have him sporting guns like Johnson’s), the addition of some gnarly forearm tattoos and — if you look very closely — the subtraction of a single pocket button. Note also that the Shot Caller poster misspells the name of the movie’s star, calling him Nikolaj Costner-Waldau.

While it is perfectly plausible that some very over-worked poster artist might have lazily reused elements from an earlier poster, it seems somewhat implausible that the same artist would misspell the name of the movie’s star, which leads one to believe that perhaps the Shot Caller image is not official. Then again, there have been so many examples of lazy poster art in recent years that maybe it’s not a stretch to believe the artist would actually do something so egregious as to get the lead actor’s name wrong. Quality control in posters appears to be at a low ebb at this point in time.

The truly amazing thing about this story is to realize that, just four short years ago, Dwayne Johnson was still acting in B-level action movies like Snitch. It’s stunning to think how far he’s come in such a short time. Not long ago he was just earning his stripes as an action hero, and now he’s starring in movies like the action remake Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, the video game adaptation Rampage and the China-set high-rise disaster movie Skyscraper.
