DC Unveils New Heroes From All-Star Creators: Teleporters, Assassins and Monsters

Five titles, showcasing wild comic book creations, will spin out of the 'Dark Nights: Metal' summer event storyline.

For DC Entertainment, the upcoming Dark Nights: Metal event by critically acclaimed Batman creators Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo is just the start of something new. In fact, it's the start of five new things — all-new comic series co-created by some of the biggest creators at the company, under the umbrella title Dark Matter.

The five series, announced at the Diamond Retailer Summit at the C2E2 convention in Chicago, will feature characters introduced in Metal, with DC emphasizing the role the artists for each title are contributing toward the overall direction. “Comics are a visual medium and with these titles the artists are working hand in hand with the writers in shaping the look and direction of their character," DC publisher Dan DiDio said in a statement. "In reaffirming the craft of making comics, we’ve brought together a master class of talent, led by Greg Capullo, Andy Kubert, Jim Lee and John Romita Jr., to help set the style, tone and visual direction for these books. With these four industry giants taking the lead, I feel we can bring the power and energy expected from superhero storytelling back to the page."

Lee himself said that the Dark Matter books are "a return to bringing both the writer and artist to the fore to unlock their full potential," adding, "At the talent summit we discussed what was missing in comics and how we could create something that’s new for this generation of fans. The result was Dark Matter. You’ll see bombastic action scenes and a visual narrative driven by the artist. This approach has energized the creators involved, myself included, and we’re going to have a lot of fun with these books."

The new Dark Matter titles are:

The Silencer by Dan Abnett and John Romita Jr. (September)

The world's most deadly assassin has to abandon her retirement when her new suburban life is threatened by ghosts from her past.

Sideways by Dan DiDio, Justin Jordan and Kenneth Rocafort (September)

In the aftermath of an accident, a teenager has the ability to teleport through alternate dimensions, but his new power comes with a dangerous temptation.

Immortal Men by James Tynion IV and Jim Lee (October)

Five siblings from the dawn of time work together to save humanity from forces it doesn't understand, even as they hide from the world themselves.

Damage by Robert Venditti and Tony S. Daniel (October)

A new recruit is given the opportunity to serve his country by transforming into a monster who has only one limit: after one hour, he'll turn back into his human self.

New Challengers by Scott Snyder and Andy Kubert (December)

A revival of the classic Challengers of the Unknown concept, a new team of people who have cheated death set out to uncover the mysteries of the world.

The previously announced Dark Nights: Metal, now the first book in the Dark Matter line, launches in August.
