Lionsgate Nabs Rights to James Wan's 'Smart House'

10:42 AM PDT 4/20/2017 by Etan Vlessing

The thriller from the 'Saw' co-creator will be directed by Alexandre Aja and released by the studio's Summit Entertainment label.

Lionsgate has acquired the rights to the thriller Smart House, based on an original idea by Saw co-creator James Wan.

Alexandre Aja (Piranha 3D, The Hills Have Eyes) will direct the film, based on a script by Brad Keene (The Grudge 3, From Within).

The genre title will be released by the studio's Summit Entertainment label. Wan will also produce the film under his Atomic Monster company banner, with head of production Michael Clear overseeing the project.

Aja is also a producer on Smart House, along with Gregory Levasseur (Piranha 3D, Mirrors). The pic will portray a world of smart phones and smart cars and a family in the witness protection program placed in the custody of a state-of-the-art autonomous "smart house." When a group of assassins locates the family, the smart house goes into a lethal defense mode.

Wan directed Lionsgate’s original Saw movie, his first feature film, and executive produced all its sequels. He most recently helmed and produced via Atomic Monster The Conjuring 2. Atomic Monster also produced the 2016 release Lights Out and the upcoming Annabelle: Creation.

The deal was negotiated for Lionsgate by Robert Melnik, Jason Constantine and Eda Kowan. Attorney David Fox, Paradigm and Stacey Testro International negotiated the deal on behalf of Atomic Monster.
