HTC Teases Squeezable U Smartphone

The U will reportedly come with sensors embedded in the frame that respond to squeezing or swiping gestures made along the phone's left and right edges.

You'll be able to squeeze HTC's upcoming U smartphone, which will launch on May 16.

Exactly why you'd want to squeeze it, though, is unclear: all we know is that HTC teased the U launch on Thursday with a video and a countdown website that simply reads, "Squeeze for the brilliant."

Thanks to serial leaker Evan Blass, however, we're able to guess at a few more details about the Chinese tech giant's latest smartphone, which joins two other "U" phones unveiled in January—the U Ultra and the U Play. The U will come with sensors embedded in the frame, according to Blass, which will let you customize actions that correspond to squeezing or swiping gestures you make along the phone's left and right edges.

Indeed, the teaser video HTC uploaded to Twitter depicts a U user giving an almost-imperceptible squeeze with the thumb and pointer finger, although it's unclear how the phone responds.

As for the rest of the U's features, Blass reports that it will be powered by a Snapdragon 835 processor, the same one found in the new Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus. It will almost certainly run HTC's skinned version of the Android OS, called Sense 9, and its cameras will feature the same resolution as the ones on the U Ultra, according to Blass.

If you're in the market for a squeezable Android handset, be sure to request a link to the live-stream event from the HTC launch website. Those in the US will have to either stay up late or set an alarm, as the event takes places at 2 a.m. ET/ 11 p.m. PT.
