Philips Takes Hue Outdoors

Philips Hue Outdoor

Philips is taking its smart lighting outdoors.

The company on Monday introduced a new line of Hue outdoor lighting products, including wall-mounted luminaries, spot lighting, and pillar posts. These new outdoor products are fully compatible with the Philips Hue ecosystem and work the same way as the company's indoor range. You can connect them to the Hue bridge, then control them via the accompanying app or with your voice.

"Our customers are always looking for new ways to extend their smart lighting system and the new Philips Hue outdoor range takes it a huge step further," Philips Lighting Home Systems and Luminaires Business Leader Sridhar Kumaraswamy said in a statement. "The … range enables you to make the most of your outside areas, be it creating the ideal ambiance to host a BBQ at the weekend or beautifying your garden."

With the Hue app, you can check and control your lights wherever you are, and schedule them to switch on and off at specific times. You can also use the app's Home & Away function to set up loction-based routines, so, for instance, your outdoor lights automatically switch on when you're about to arrive home.

Among the new range is a spotlight called Lily meant to "highlight the key design features in your garden, illuminating beautiful flower beds, or potted plants." Another new light, Calla, is designed for path lighting. With the Hue app, you can choose from 16 million different colors for your lights to shine.

Philips' new outdoor lighting range will be available in the US and Europe in July starting at $29.99. The Lily base pack is priced at $279.99 and includes three light points plus accessories while the Calla bollard will set you back $129.99.
