Huawei CFO arrested in Canada

Huawei chief financial officer and deputy chair, Meng Wanzhou, has been arrested in Canada.

The exact charges have not been confirmed, but initial reports have suggested it could concern breaking sanctions the US has imposed on Iran.

Canada is now expected to extradite Wanzhou to the United States, where according to its ministry of justice, "She is sought for extradition by the United States, and a bail hearing has been set for Friday."

Huawei has said it is aware of the arrest, but it was "not aware of any wrongdoing by Ms Meng". It said Wanzhou did not violate any American or Canadian law and that it complied with "all applicable laws and regulations where it operates, including applicable export control and sanction laws and regulations of the UN, US and EU. The company believes the Canadian and US legal systems will ultimately reach a just conclusion."

The Chinese government protested the arrest, with the country's embassy in Canada demanding Wanzhou to be released. The US justice department is tight-lipped for the moment.

These days, Huawei is having a hard time doing business in the West. Many western governments, spearheaded by the USA, believe China is using Huawei and other companies to spy on its adversaries. Many countries have either banned, or are considering banning Huawei from building their 5G infrastructure, citing fears for national security.
