You Can Now Use Google Home as an Intercom

Google Home

Good news for those with a Google Home device and a big house: you can now use the smart speaker as an intercom.

Google on Monday announced that you can now broadcast your voice to the smart speaker via its virtual Assistant. This feature is rolling out to Assistant today on phones and speakers set to English in the US, Australia, Canada, and the UK.

"When you need to round up the family in the morning, just say 'Ok Google, broadcast it's time for school!' and your message will broadcast to all Assistant enabled speakers in your home," Google Home Product Manager Alex Duong and Google Assistant Software Engineer Nam Do wrote in a blog post.

This feature also gives the old-school dinner bell a high-tech update. Just say "Ok Google, broadcast its dinner time," and a dinner bell will ring on your Google Home devices. This way, you don't have to bang on the ceiling, shout, or walk upstairs.

You can speak your command into a different Google Home, another Assistant-enabled speaker, or Assistant on your phone. Just make sure you're signed in with the same Google Account on all your devices.

"If you're just leaving the office, you can let your family know you're coming with a simple 'Ok Google, broadcast I'm on my way home!' to the Assistant on your phone, and it will broadcast to your Google Homes," Duong and Do wrote. Support for additional languages is "coming soon," the duo added.

Meanwhile, several retailers are advertising Google Home deals for Black Friday. Costco is taking $50 off a Google Home 2 pack while Best Buy is selling the Google Home Mini plus a $10 Best Buy gift card for $29.99 ($19.01 off).
