Lyft: Here's How Much Our Drivers Make

How to Best Use Lyft

Ever wonder how much you could make as a Lyft driver?

In a blog post today, Lyft said that as of last month, its drivers were making $18.83 an hour, on average, while working, including idle time they spent waiting for requests. In Lyft's top 25 markets, that average bumped up to $21.08 an hour.

Taking idle time between rides out of the equation, drivers made $29.47 an hour, on average, Lyft said, or $31.18 an hour in Lyft's top 25 markets. Of course, location and time of day affects how much you make as a driver for Lyft and similar services.

"After busy weekends like St. Patrick's Day, you can find screenshots on social forums, with some drivers making upwards of $600 in a single night," Lyft's Laura Copeland wrote. "Other drivers in cities newer to Lyft, or those who pick up rides only during their morning commute to the office, report more conservative totals." In general, Lyft is "busiest on nights and weekends" and quieter in the afternoons.

Also keep in mind that you'll incur about $3 to $5 an hour in expenses, depending on the year and model of your car, while driving for Lyft.

Looking to get a side hustle going? You must be at least 21 years old with an active US driver's license to become a Lyft driver. Your vehicle must also meet Lyft's requirements; for more information, head here.

Meanwhile, frequent Lyft riders might be happy to hear that the company is testing a subscription service which would remove the need to pay every time you travel.
