LG Promises Speedier Smartphone OS Updates

Android Oreo Tips

New versions of Android are notoriously slow to roll out. Right now, for instance, the latest version of Android, Oreo, which was released to the public in August 2017, is only running on around 1 percent of Android devices, according to Google's developers dashboard.

For those with LG smartphones, this should be less of an issue going forward. The company today opened a new Software Upgrade Center in South Korea, which it says will focus on delivering "faster, timelier, smartphone operating system and software updates."

LG says that getting Android Oreo rolled out to the G6 will be one of the Software Update Center's "first initiatives." The company plans to start updating handsets in Korea later this month, followed by "other key markets."

"The creation of the center will enable LG to roll out OS updates faster in countries where LG smartphones are available to ensure that customers around the world receive the same level of quality service," LG wrote in a news release. Besides developing and pushing out regular OS updates, the center will be responsible for "continuously testing the stability and compatibility between hardware and software after updates," the company added.

Meanwhile, a recent study by researchers at German security firm Security Research Labs revealed that Android phone manufacturers are seriously slacking when it comes to deploying security updates, according to Wired.

"Not only do many Android phone vendors fail to make patches available to their users, or delay their release for months; they sometimes also tell users their phone's firmware is fully up to date, even while they've secretly skipped patches," the report notes.
