Cool and Comfortable Short-Sleeved Button-Downs

Here are four short-sleeved button-up shirts that will remind you that the leaves aren’t changing yet. Whether tucked in or out, paired with jeans or shorts or chinos, show the world that it's an endless summer, as long as you dress the part.

Taylrd

This brand-spanking-new company based in New York knows how to have fun without going over the top. Taylrd’s short-sleeved button-ups come in a range of prints — tiny flamingos, palm leaves, and a variety of geometric designs — in colors ranging from seafoam green to light purple to crisp white, all with a great fit. It’s a hard choice, but our favorite is the Aztec Purple Short Sleeve (top, $59). It, like the others in their Coastal Collection, is made from summer-weight 100 percent cotton. Besides their great short-sleeved shirts, they’ve got super soft long-sleeved shirts, great summer shorts, and ultra-comfortable chinos that come in colors like salmon and olive green. And they do it all at a great price point (and they ain’t even made in China).

Zachary Prell

The clothing company launched by a former financier a decade ago has a multitude of great micro print short-sleeved shirts to choose from but our current favorite is the Souza ($158). It features an exclusive layered geometric pattern that has a somewhat nautical vibe from Slovenia (apparently the Slovenians are some badass fabric designers) with a point collar and mother of pearl buttons in a 100 percent cotton shirt that definitely says summer.

Frank and Oak

For guys who are into more subtle summer prints check out Frank and Oak’s dot dye cotton-linen shirt in grey ($50 at Spring). This Canadian company combines cotton, for a bit of structure and stretch, and linen, for its ability to keep you cool, into a minimalist shirt that forgoes the placket and chest pocket and features a slim collar and off-white pearl buttons.

Iron and Resin

The 50s were the heyday for the casual summer button-up and Cali company Iron & Resin taps into that era’s love of fun patterns and casual cool with their Linear Shirt, with wavy lines floating across the 100 percent cotton poplin fabric. It comes in natural (on sale for $43 at Huckberry) and military green ($49). We’re into the natural so the eye-catching pattern really shines through.
